Patea to Whanganui

A good ride today. The road is quite high for most of the route affording views across pleasant farmland and down to the sea. There are quite a few downs then ups, courtesy of river valleys. The shoulder tends to peter out on these sections, but it wasn't especially busy so we managed fine. We're definitely happier employing the tactic of just stopping and getting off the road when trucks approach us on tight sections. It's just not worth the stress of the close passes!
The sign for Whanganui seems a little premature distance-wise, but the approach to the city is all downhill. It's a nice spot - nestled next to the river with a good stash of pretty buildings, coffee shops and restaurants, and galleries and museums. We're staying at Tamara Riverside Lodge which is a really lovely hostel - we have a small double room for just $54! Huge communal areas and great kitchen, and a mostly older clientele. There's even a bike shed. Great spot for a rest day tomorrow - given the forecast we're postponing our trip along the river road until the rain goes away!
